Being a parent is hard work. I love being a mom to my four little rascals, but it can be stressful and a lot of time. Keeping kids safe and happy and healthy have always been my top priorities. When they are new babies, all you want is sleep. As toddlers all you want is for then to relax for 2 minutes. At preschool and school age you lament over how fast they are growing and want to hold on to tem forever. It is fun watching them grow, learn and experience life on their journey, but there are so many road blocks set up that you have to be there to help them through the detours. Mistakes and accidents will happen, but we as parents can do our part to help prevent some of them. Things like online safety, poison prevention, resistance to drugs and alcohol, etc are all important things we need to yeah our children from a young age.
There is no guide of the dos and don’ts, but can constantly strive to make informed decisions about the well-being of our family. The Make Safe Happen program is dedicated to reducing accidental injury in children. Did you know this is the leading cause of death in children? Nearly nine million children are treated at emergency rooms across the country and more than 9,000 children die each year due to accidental injuries {information according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention}. This number is staggering. I have been in the emergency room with my kids a few times and it is a scary situation. Because I want to make my home safer, I have taken advantage of the tools an resources of the Make Safe Happen website as well as the app (for iOS and android) as well as the local safety events launched by Nationwide in 2015. Nationwide has been a champion for child safety and well-being for more than 60 years.
March 20-26 was Poison Prevention Week. If you didn’t get a chance to review safety and prevention tips with your family, now is a great time. Children have a way of getting into everything which is why 9 out of 10 poisonings occur in the home. From cleaners to medicines and household items, there is so much around us that could be a risk. Make sure you talk to your kids from a very young age and educate them about what is safe and what is not. Some of the more modern poisoning risks include: hand sanitizers, laundry packets, e-‐cigarettes and button batteries. Some of these things I never even thought of. Here are 5 poison prevention tips for your home:
- Keep your cleaners and medicines out of children reach or use cabinet locks to keep kids from getting into them.
- Make sure things like batteries, laundry products, even plant food are out of reach of children.
- Properly dispose of medicines, cleaners and other items that you no longer need.
- Talk to your kids and educate them about what is safe and what is not and why.
- Install a carbon monoxide detector in your home
Poisonings can be scary. It is good to be prepared it something happens. According to the CDC, “Every day, over 300 children in the U.S. ages 0 to 19 are treated in an emergency department, and two children die, as a result of being poisoned”. Here are Five Toxic Products To Put On Your Watch List:
