I don’t know about you, but I LOVE feeling happy. This doesn’t mean that my life is perfect or free from trials, most of the time – it is far from it. But I have been working hard on shifting my focus from negativity to positivity. It helps me remember what is important and it has helped me get through very hard things without completely losing myself. I am excited to share these ways to change your focus so you can feel happier too. Especially if you are struggling with depression, anxiety, social issues, relationships, etc. Feeling happy isn’t something that you should go without. Don’t suffer in silence. You can change your focus and start feeling happier now.
All of the ways I mention below will have a huge effect on your attitude and your mind if you let them. But I personally believe that the number one biggest change you can make is to include God more often. Make him a very central part of your everyday life, and you will find that just this one change will affect your life in a very positive way.

Don’t get discouraged
It’s normal to feel sad or anxious from time to time. When you are unable to cope with those feelings and recover from them, that may be a sign of mental or emotional challenges that require help from a parent, leader, doctor, or professional counselor. Such help can be a blessing from your loving Father in Heaven. If you ever have thoughts of harming yourself or ending your own life, seek help right away. Remember, you are loved, valued, and needed. Whatever your emotional or mental struggles may be, seek peace in Jesus Christ and His gospel.

With that being said, here are more ways you can change your focus so you can feel happier. I have personally experienced each of these and I can attest that they do work if you let them. It might not be overnight – but if you put a determined effort into actively working on each of these, you will notice a difference.

Sometimes you may feel sad or drained because you are putting either too much focus on yourself or not enough. This can be a hard balance to find. As a mother I completely understand the feeling of not focusing on myself enough. But I haven’t ever regretted putting so much of my time and focus on my kids. They are most important to me and I want to make sure they know I will always be there. This looks different for everyone – but just don’t forget about your responsibilities and commitments.

10 ways to change your focus so you can feel happier
- Practice Gratitude: Take a moment each day to reflect on the things you’re grateful for. This can shift your focus from what’s lacking in your life to what you already have. A gratitude journal is a great way to work on this. You can also go back and remember other things you were grateful for to help you get past trials (if something similar happens).
- Engage in Positive Activities: Do things that bring you joy and satisfaction. Whether it’s a hobby, spending time with loved ones, or pursuing a personal goal. Engaging in positive activities can boost your mood and help you feel happier.
- Exercise Regularly: Physical activity releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. Even a short walk or some stretching can make a difference. Set a time each day to exercise. This Daily Fitness Planner can help.
- Healthy Eating: Proper nutrition can impact your mood. Eating a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help stabilize your mood. It will help keep you from “downtime” after caffeine and sugar rushes, as well as have an overall better feeling of health.
- Practice Mindfulness and Meditation: These practices can help you stay in the present moment, reduce stress, and increase overall happiness.
- Cultivate Relationships: Building and maintaining strong, supportive relationships with friends and family can provide a significant source of happiness. It is especially important if you are married – to have a good relationship with your spouse. As well as your children.
- Set Goals and Celebrate Achievements: Having goals to work toward and celebrating your achievements, no matter how small, can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment. This can be anything from getting a part of your house organized and cleaned, to a fitness goal, spiritual goal, or financial goal.
- Limit Negative Influences: Be mindful of what you expose yourself to, including negative news or toxic relationships. Reducing exposure to negativity can help you keep a more positive outlook and keep your mindset more positive.
- Get Adequate Sleep: Lack of sleep can have a significant impact on your mood and overall well-being. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. This also means turning off electronics at least an hour before you want to sleep and spending some time meditating and relaxing before bed.
- Seek Professional Help: If you’re struggling with persistent unhappiness, consider speaking with a mental health professional. They can provide valuable guidance and support. You may need medication or counseling to help you.
Customize your focus to feel happier
Happiness looks different for everyone. Find what works for you and keep working on it. It is an ongoing process. Find strategies that resonate with you personally and make them a part of your daily life. Additionally, it’s normal to have ups and downs, and seeking happiness doesn’t mean avoiding negative emotions entirely but learning how to manage them in a healthy way. Remember to include God in your journey and let him help you in your healing, growing, joys, and sorrows.
