We love reading. We are always looking for great books to read together as a family. My older girls age 11 and 9 love sitting down with me as we take turns reading a new book. My joy is watching their faces as the pages start to paint the pictures in their minds, and listening to them talk about what we are reading. They always have fun ideas of how it will turn out and they love to even reenact the stories. We just finished the new book Treasure Hunters: Peril at the Top of the World by James Patterson and Chris Grabenstein. The Treasure Hunters series is so much fun because it is writing through a kids perspective whose family are spies. My kids are already great lovers of spy and mystery so they took right to these books.
From a mom’s perspective, the book is written in such a way that kids will get pulled in and be excited about what they are reading. The descriptions and language is familiar to them, and there are fun black and white hand drawn pictures that coincide with the story every few pages, and even include a few lines of commentary to the effect of a comic book. This adds an extra layer to the story, because the lines are not in the regular reading. There are some words or things that they talk about that my girls (especially my 9 year old) doesn’t understand, but I love the chance to explain what it means and talk about it for a little bit before moving on.
My 9 year old says “I like Treasure Hunters because we can spend time together as a family reading it. It is a fun book and it has kids in it doing a lot of cool stuff and I get to learn about new places. The Kidd’s are a cool family. I think it was cool how Bick and Beck got into the truck and risked their lives to try and save the sarcophagus. The story is really entertaining and exciting and it helps me learn about new things.”
My 11 year old says “I like how it is an adventurous book. I like the spy adventures they go on. I enjoy spy adventures because they are fun to read and I can imagine myself in the story. I think Treasures Hunters is an inspirational book to get out more and enjoy adventures. Treasure Hunter’s is a fun book because I can learn about different places and have fun reading about the things I like.”
We wholeheartedly recommended the Treasure Hunter books! They are great for all ages, and so much fun to read together as a family. Even my 6 and 4 year old loves listening to the adventures and seeing the pictures in the books. They ask questions about the story that let me know that they have been listening and understand most, if not all, of what we are reading about. Then I hear them playing and pretending to be spies, and I love the jump start this has on their imaginations.
