I love a good movie, but even more than a good movie, I love a true story made into a good movie. When you watch “Arthur the King” be prepared for a ride that will keep you engaged and wanting more and more throughout the whole film. I love dogs, and we lost our Jakey to cancer last summer – so this movie was very emotional for me. So just be prepared to go in – for a very raw and emotional journey that will leave you feeling good and happy.
The story is based on a 2016 non-fiction book entitled “Arthur – The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home,” by Mikael Lindnord. Mikael Lindnord is the storyteller of his own true experiences during a 435-mile competitive adventure race with 3 teammates in Ecuador in 2014.
The movie takes place in the Dominican Republic. During the “Adventure Race World Championship,” the main character “Michael Light,” played by (Mark Wahlberg) encounters and befriends a stray dog who appears to have been abused, not taken care of, and in need of medical attention. The team soon becomes attached to the dog and eventually gives him his unique name, “Arthur – The King,” named after and in honor of the King of Camelot.
As Arthur befriends and accompanies the adventure race team on their trek through the Dominican Republic, they encounter multiple obstacles including life-threatening and nail-biting moments. The suspense builds as they face injury and illness during the race and possible elimination.
This heartwarming film will give you a renewed love for animals “especially dogs” as you witness this testament to loyalty, love, kindness, friendship, and relentless perseverance. The cast is superb as well as the acting and the directing.
The all-star cast includes:
- Mark Wahlberg – Michael Light
- Simu Liu – Leo
- Nathalie Emmanuel – Olivia
- Ali Suliman – Chik
- Bear Grylls – News (narrator)
- Juliet Rylance – Helena “Lindnord” Light
- Rob Collins – Decker Swanson
- Carlton Byrd – John
Arthur The King Parents Guide
I would say 10+ for this movie as some of the scenes are a little more intense and there is some language.
I give it a 5/5!
Don’t expect to sit back and relax during this. While there are some slower parts of the movie, most of it is on the edge of your seat as you cheer, laugh, cry, and celebrate with Michael and his team. Love the movie – and it’s a great story and a reminder to work hard and believe in yourself.
