How can you save money in a rural area?
Sharyn asks:
We live in a small town with one grocery store, and we have to travel to get to any “real” stores. Groceries are overpriced and we don’t even get coupons here. What are some ways I can save money even though I live in a rural area?

I would go to the coupon sites on-line to print what I needed. There are many available. I would determine what we used, in say ,a month, then try to buy as much as possible, with making 1 trip to travel. buying many things in bulk is cheaper. Using coupons will save you more, perhaps the cost of travel.
Find others in your area that may need to travel as well. Order what you can online and use many coupons. Email some of the companies,ex. Kellogs, Betty Crocker and see if they have coupons or samples they can send out.
I’d say grow as much as you can. If you are close enough to a “normal” store you could drive to it and stock up with as many things as you can. (Coupons and sales are your friend)
couponing but you could alsolook for online deals and free samples too
We used to have the same problem, we bought in bulk and we price matched and did our research on store deals and we made a very detailed grocery list so we didn’t forget anything.
I would grow my own fruits and vegetables.
We have a large family & alot of little mouths to feed so we find items on sale & stock up. I take a Saturday or Sunday & premake meals and freeze them with the items I got on sale & then we have already made meals for the coming weeks (which also saves on time). I always save my vegetable scraps & make broths, etc.. instead of buying them. Anything that saves some money & still insures my family is eating good 🙂
Stock up when you do go to the larger stores!
not just couponing, canning and freezing help immensly
we love couponing
I’d say coupon and get as much things as you’d need for a month or more at a time.
IAgree with couponing!
Very interesting topic! I do not live in this type of area. I would love to get some tips on saving money living in a tourist area.
I totally believe in coupons and lots of them, they will save you more then you think. Check all local stores, get their coupon policys and start collecting inserts and printing and shopping for nearly free.
I live about 20 minutes from the closest walmart, in our town we have an Albertson’s which can be very expensive compared to walmart so clipping coupons or major grocery shopping at walmart when I can get into town really helps.
My Great Aunt lives in a very rural area, I recall as a child calling her basement the “grocery store” because she had so much stocked down there. I think that was the only way they could spend less on groceries was to go into the city 1 time a month or so and load up.
I have never lived outside the city, so I may not be the best authority – but I would think that shopping online might be a good option if you live in a really remote area – you should probably set up a separate e-mail account to avoid cluttering your primary one, then sign up for the ads of every store that sells grocery and household items so you can keep track of the best deals and stock up when you see the best prices. That way you can limit your local purchases to perishables and not overpay for the basics.
We used to live in a very small town in California and it was very expensive. We had a Walmart, but it wasn’t a super Walmart and the grocery chains that were in town were very expensive. I have a family of 5 and am a stay at home mom, so cutting costs were really important. I actually had to do a lot of couponing and got a lot of them online and did price checks on everything. It was tough for the four years we were there
Use as many coupons as possible and do a lot of shopping at one visit (hoping that they have a lot of great sale deals) going on when you go.
order bigger newspapers with coupons shipped to your home.
Coupons and more coupons lol!!
Same for me! We now have to deal with Walmart no longer matching other stores brands on items too! It is getting really hard!!! I try and save up grocery shopping and do a big trip with coupons when I go to one of the bigger towns.
Definitely combine coupons with sales. Price compare all stores in your area. Saving a dollar here or there adds up!
Garden! One of my biggest ways to save money is by growing my own fruits and veggies and herbs!!!
well being you don’t get coupons can you print them? if so combine printed coupons with sale items. I only buy things that are on sale.
couponing best way
combine coupons with sale prices
i don’t know why you can’t get coupons there, but if it is a matter of obtaining the coupons there are many online coupons available and i would assume there are a few chain stores around like walmart not too far away. Otherwise to save money I suppose you could recycle because sometimes you can get a few cents from recycling bottles or plastic but that depends on your area also. Upcycling is also a good idea because if you can figure out creative ways to reuse items you may not have to spend the money to buy things like clothes or vases or purses or whatever. Other than that I’m out of ideas right now!
I use alot of coupons and keep track of all sales events plus I save money also by making my own laundry soap and fabric softner.
Follow the ads and use coupons!
I coupon and stack with store coupons and I visit all stores in the same areas
By using coupons. That’s always the best way.
Couponing! I coupon a lot and buy a lot of sales living in a rural area you don’t have large shopping centers, the only place here to shop is walmart.
