- We get to have a more in-depth look at the history of Lydia as well as Beetlejuice himself. We learn more about their backstories and their current lives.
- The characters, storyline, and structure of the film are just the same as in the 1988 version. There are very few modifications to the sets that would let you know it’s been 36 years since the last movie.
- Michael Keaton is as rowdy, fun, and obnoxious as ever. Beetlejuice has a more prominent role in this movie, and we learn more about his background and his life in the after. They focus a lot more attention on the story of his life there.
- There are several things that are similar to the original (as a nod) and I loved it.
Here are things you may or may not like:
- There is just as much language (maybe more) as the original. (Yes – 2 F words – 1 spoken and 1 written).
- It is just as crude as the first one (and by more characters than just Beetlejuice)
- There is more gore and frightening elements to this movie. Especially baby Beetlejuice (its like Chucky in Beetlejuice makeup).
- There is a big build-up and storyline and it kind of fizzled without a big climax.
With all that being said, there were kids of all ages at the screening and I didn’t see anyone leaving crying – but that doesn’t mean they didn’t pick up a thing or two or have a nightmare. If your kids are sensitive to horror – I would watch it first to get an idea of what you’re dealing with.

Other things to note – Delores is fun and while she is supposed to be this scary soul sucker – I didn’t find her character overly intimidating. Willem Dafoe was a lot of fun to watch as Wolf Jackson. There are some good twists and turns and overall I enjoyed the movie.
