Last week we shared all about how to start a blog. If you read through that and decided that it is something you want to do, then the next step really is picking your niche. This is so important. You want to have a clear focus so people know what to expect when they come to your site. There are several blogging niches, but you will find you relate to one quickly.
Why do I need to pick a blogging niche?
If you write about one thing and then another and then another and don’t write about those again for a while, then your readers will not know what to expect and won’t come back (if they are looking for recipes, or crafts, etc) because you aren’t being consistent.
It’s okay to write about a couple of different things, but pick days like Monday for Recipes and Thursday for Travel or whatever, so your audience can know what to expect and when.
This circles back to niches. Picking your niche will allow you to sit down and make a content plan (or schedule) of what you are going to post about and create good, informative posts that will engage your readers and make them want to stick around for more.

What blogging niche should you pick?
First and foremost, don’t pick the niche just because you can make money writing about it. If you don’t love it, if you aren’t good at it or aren’t passionate about it, your readers will recognize that quickly and they will most likely not come back.
Pick something you are good at, something you already know, something you are already doing that you want to share. With that being said, there are several popular and profitable niches in blogging right now.
Popular Blogging Niches
- Fitness/Health
- How-To/Self-Improvement (teaching something)
- Farming/Gardening/Homesteading
- Startup/Business
- Finance
- Technology
- News
- Food/Recipes – especially if you incorporate videos. Popular topics right now are pressure cooker (Instant Pot, Crock Pot), low carb, keto, etc
- Travel
- Lifestyle (a collection of two or three of these topics above)
You can do a lot of extensive research to figure out what topics are popular, how long they have been popular, what the trends are (if it is going to stay popular) and digging deeper into specific niche topics that you may cover. Say you do fitness, but want to write about CrossFit. You can use sites like Google Adwords Keyword Planner, Google Trends, and even Pinterest and other social media to see what people are liking and engaging with.
Once you have decided what you want to write about, start thinking about a hosting/domain name, logo, and WordPress theme (site design) that will compliment what you have planned. Have a list of at least 50 post ideas in mind (writing two a week) so you can really kick start your site and get great content on there and be consistent. Everytime you think of a new idea, write it down or make a draft post in WordPress.
I hope this gets you on your way to becoming one step closer to starting your own blog. Be sure to check out How to start a blog in 5 easy steps and also sign up for our WEEKLY BLOGGING NEWSLETTER for tips, information and insider help.
