I am excited to share another great book with you this week. I just finished reading Charlotte’s Promise by Jennifer Moore. I received a copy of this book for review. All opinions are my own.
The book takes place in the early 1800s in America. It follows the story of Charlotte (Charlie) Bower and Captain Alden Thatcher.
She is taken by Indian’s and sold into slavery. After managing an escape one year later, she poses as a man and finds work on the Belladonna (Captain Thatcher’s boat). She is doing this to try and find her brother (thus the title Charlotte’s Promise, because she promised she would find him).
Captain Thatcher recognizes right away that she is not a man and almost kicks her off the boat. But doesn’t say anything after an altercation with the men looking for her.
Having been given a place on the boat as a deckhand, Charlie works hard to blend in and do her assigned duty’s well. The book is packed with humor, love, self-preservation, and happiness. There are some very intense scenes in the book and some very tender ones.
Read about Charlotte’s Promise and Captain Thatchers role in helping her
This is a great read and something I would read with my 12 and 14 year old girls. Enjoy a clean romance and a wonderful story line with characters that you will fall in love with right away. The book isn’t slow or hard to get into. It starts off by pulling your right into the story and just moving along.
Jennifer has been a favorite of mine for a while and I was very excited to get her newest book. It follows right on the heels of The Shipbuilder’s Wife, so be sure to read that first (but you don’t have to). Really, all of her books are interconnected, but also are great as stand-alone books. You can see the list of them all below.
I am excited to be part of a giveaway where you can win your own copy of this book. If you don’t want to wait, you can order it from Amazon.com here.

One year ago Charlotte Bower’s life was ripped apart when Creek Indians attacked, killed her parents, and separated her from her young brother—now, she will stop at nothing to find him. After a year of captivity, she has finally made her escape.
Her search will begin in New Orleans, where captives were taken after the raid. But how to reach a city hundreds of miles away? As she watches men boarding a waiting ship, Charlotte formulates a bold plan: if it’s men they need for the ship’s crew, it’s a man they’ll get. Taking on her childhood nickname, Charlie, it is all too easy to gain passage on the New Orleans-bound vessel. Easy, that is, until Charlie is caught . . .
From the moment he sets eyes on the new deckhand, Captain Alden Thatcher knows one thing for certain: Charlie Bower is no man. But for reasons of his own, he keeps her secret. As their journey progresses, however, the voyage is increasingly ill-fated.
With danger ever present, Charlie and the captain find themselves relying on one another in ways they’d never imagined. As they draw closer to her goal, Charlotte is faced with the most perilous adventure of all—an adventure that may risk her heart.
