On my trip to LA in March I had the opportunity to screen Disney’s new movie Adventures in Babysitting staring Sabrina Carpenter and Sofia Carson. The movie is great – my kids have already watched the copy we got several times. This is Disney’s 100th Disney Channel Original Movie. It airs on the Disney Channel on June 24, 2016. I am sharing part of the interview with you below, but before you ready it, watch this clip that shares the first 10 minutes of Disney’s Adventures in Babysitting:
The movie is really cute. It follows two girls Lola (Sofia Carson) and Jenny (Sabrina Carpenter) on their adventures of not only trying to babysit these cute crazy kids, but also discovering more about themselves and learning who they really are.
We were able to screen the movie and then Sofia Carson and Sabrina Carpenter came in and did a fun Q&A with us. They told us that they filmed the movie over a year ago (from April) and that Sofia turned 22 on the set and Sabrina was 15. Now Sofia is 23 and Sabrina is almost 17. We wanted to know about how much fun they had while filming the movie. You could tell they were great friends and always had fun, no matter where they were. Sofia told us “No. No, actually, it was a terrible time…” and Sabrina chimes in with “We really dislike each other”. This really made us all laugh.
Then Sabrina continued with “seriously though, those kids…”. Sofia added “the five kids are, are some of the most talented you’d ever know. And, they were so professional, and they were such a joy to work with. I wish I could babysit them.” “They became, like, our family…we all became like a family, and we had little parties every weekend, all of us. We were singing and dancing.” Sabrina told us. “We had the greatest time.”
We wanted to know a little more about the girls so we asked them to share what the funniest thing is about each other. Sabrina didn’t even skip a beat. She immediately answered “That she’s not that funny…” pointing to Sofia. Sofia smiled and said “That’s what I was gonna say! I’m not funny.” Sabrina added “No, but that’s what makes her funny is that she knows that she’s not funny. But with the script, she’s so funny…” Sofia gives her a look and says “Oh, thank you.” and again Sabrina didn’t skip a beat and answered “No problem.” with a cheeky grin. Then she continues “If she had writers for her all the time, she’d be so funny…” Sofia replied “I’d be hysterical. Good thing I’m an actress. And Sabrina’s probably the funniest person you will ever meet.”
We wanted to know if they had seen the original and what it was like in the audition. Sabrina told us “we auditioned with each other and it worked. We’re very lucky that it worked out perfectly.” Sofia added “I did see the movie. I was a big fan. My mom was a big fan of the movie. So to be able to create a new version of such a classic, beloved tale, for this new generation, was something I was honored to do. And it was an incredible experience. Apparently I have a thing with, like, sequels, and remakes.” Sabrina chimed in with “apparently me, too”.
So are you guys more of a Lola or Jenny? Sofia told us “I would say I’m kind of an in between. Lola is this really cool free spirited young girl who isn’t afraid to just live life, despite the consequences of sometimes making irresponsible decisions. But she’s really passionate about her art. And a very strong girl. And I’m also very passionate about… I think we both are…about what we do about our music and acting. And we’re both also… I’m just gonna answer this for both of us…independent girls. Both we have a really strong, incredible moms. And they taught us to be strong girls, or represent girl power. And Lola and Jenny are both like that. ‘Cause Jenny is a little bit more inside the box. She’s still a strong, powerful young girl and we both save the day together.” “Sabrina added “It’s true, though! I take from Lola because she’s got that edgy sense of humor, and she’s very passionate about her art. Whereas Jenny can’t be creative to save her life. And I think that’s kind of what I spend my life doing. But I will say that I am sort of a perfectionist like Jenny.”
We asked Sabrina and Sofia who their role models were growing up? Sofia told us “My role model’s always been my mom. She’s the most incredible woman in the world and I always strive to be just a little bit like her every day. Even if it’s just, like, 10% of what she is, that would be enough, ’cause she is truly my hero.” These two girls made the room full of women smile and feel warm fuzzies. Sabrina added “My mom and dad, and my older sisters. My whole family. The Carpenter bunch is kind of a special bunch. And I think that my parents always stressed in my head that I was unique, and that I was special and that I was different. And then I could do whatever I put my mind to. Those are the kind of people that you want to have in your life forever. And I’m lucky to call them family.”
