This is a Maleficent Movie Review but I am not giving anything away. lol. I want you to see the movie without knowing any of the amazing twists the movie takes.
I have loved Disney’s Sleeping Beauty since I can remember. I used to dress up as Princess Aurora and sing the songs. And I am happy that my daughters now do the same. So when I heard that they were making “real life” Sleeping Beauty movie, but about Maleficent – I was very surprised and intrigued. The more I got to know about the film, the more excited I was to see it and learn this new version of a story I love.
“Maleficent” explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the classic “Sleeping Beauty” and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king’s newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever.
There are so many things to Maleficent that not only I, but my children walked away with. The end of the movie is very touching. The overall theme to the movie is extremely moving and something that young children will relate to. I was very surprised that my 9 year old turned to me after the movie and started telling me about her favorite part – and that it was my favorite part too. That really touched me and I am so glad she saw the deeper meaning there. All four of my kids sat through the movie and while my 2 year old wasn’t all that interested (since it wasn’t a cartoon, lol) she wasn’t scared at all either, actually watching the more action packed sequences.
Maleficent is a movie that you can go watch as a family and not have to worry about inappropriate content. There is a little fantasy violence but it is not graphic. You know your kids and what they can handle. I took all of my kids because I knew they wouldn’t be scared. If you have a child that you are not sure about – then go see the movie first.
The cast is fantastic and each played their roll to perfection.
- Maleficent is played by Angelina Jolie (who I got to meet and interview. WOW. You can read about that here.)
- Diaval (the raven) is played by Sam Riley (I will post his interview next week).
- King Stefan is played by Sharlto Copley (very funny and loved talking with him, read about it here).
- Princess Aurora is played by Elle Fanning (love how sweet she is, read our interview here).
- Robert Stromberg directed Maleficent (his debut) and did an amazing job. (read about our interview here).
- There were many others involved and I loved each character.
I don’t want to give anything away – so I am not going to go through or write a sequence of events – but I will let you know that I loved the movie. I talked to many people after the screening last night and they all had good things to say as well. The biggest response I got was “It was not what I expected”. Go see it! You will love it as well!
