This post is brought to you by Oriental Trading Co. All opinions are my own. Christmas is just around the corner, so we have been doing some holiday crafting. Our latest project was a DIY JOY wood board sign and I am in love. It turned out so good and it is really easy to make thanks to all of the great supplies we got from Oriental Trading Co. To make your own JOY boards as decor or to give as gifts for family and friends here is what you will need:
- DIY Unfinished Wood Square Plaques
- Iridescent Glitter
- Elmer’s Glue
- Monogram Stencils
- Gold decorative leaves
- Red jingle bell charms
- Hot Glue gun and sticks
- Gold spray paint
- Glue Dots
You can make several at one time, and be done in about 30-45 minutes with all of it. First of all, you are going to take the wood board and attach the stencils to the wood with tape or glue dots, but make sure they are flush/flat against the wood. Then you will spray paint it your desired color. My kids picked gold and I really like how it turned out. with the iridescent glitter and holly accent.
Wait a couple minutes after spraying and use a sharp pointed object to help you lift the stencils off and gently take them off the board (we don’t want them drying to the board, and now you can do the next board while this one dries). Once the spray paint (or acrylic paint) dries, you will take Elmer’s glue and spread a light layer over the open space where the stencil was. Now, over a paper plate, sprinkle a thick layer of glitter and let it sit for a moment (you may even want to gently tap it down) and then tip the board and dump the excess glitter onto the paper plate. Do this for the remaining letters and let dry.
While the letters are drying, you can attach the gold leaves and the bells with the hot glue. Your board is now done. You can choose to add something else or leave it as is.
Be sure to write on the back of it when you made it, who it is from and who you are giving it to. I would love to hear about how your boards turned out!
