Chimes are a fun way to spice up any outdoor garden space. We made spoon chimes with patriotic beads. I love how they turned out and wanted to share our easy step-by-step guide with you.
This was made to go with our Weekly Kid’s Activity Series – since this week we are learning more about gardening and outdoors. See all of the food, crafts, DIY, and activities we have shared so far.
To make your spoon chimes, you will need:
- old spoons
- Hammer
- Stick
- Twine
- Craft Wire
- Beads
- Scissors
- Paint (if desired)
To put the spoon chimes together, you will first take the spoons and the hammer, and flatten all of the spoons. I found it was easier to do this when you place the curved side down and pound it out that way. You will have to hold the spoon handle so it doesn’t bounce around.
Flatten the spoons
When looking for spoons to flatten, look for thin metal that is older. Those work best. Or you can buy cheap spoons that are thin metal.
NOTE: If you want to paint the stick or the spoons, this is the time to do it. Make sure they are completely dry before moving onto the next step.
Once the spoons have all been flattened, you will take the wire and tightly wrap it around the handle of the spoon. bring it up to about 1 inch above the top of the handle and make a little loop.
Next, you will take the twine and tie it tightly around the stick. At the other end, you will attach a spoon. Do this all the way down the line until all of the spoons are attached.
Now you will attach a rope across the stick like a rainbow so you can hang it. It is really easy to make and not only looks great but sounds fun on a windy day 🙂
You can obviously use different colors of beads and make these for any occasion. They also are great as gifts for friends and family or even teachers!
