We are excited for Valentine’s Day. It is a fun month to decorate for with all of the red and pink, hearts, love, etc. to use. With all of the fun pictures we have, I wanted to make a board to display them as well as the cute Valentine’s cards that my kids make, so we created this fun DIY Valentine’s Picture Board. We got most of the supplies for this project from The Oriental Trading Co.. They have a great selection of craft stuff- and their Valentine’s Day crafting items are perfect for a variety of projects. Last week we shared our DIY Enchanted Rose in a Jar craft. It was a lot of fun to make and my kids love them.
For this project, you will need the following items:
- 11×14 picture frame (or whatever size you choose. We picked ours up at DollarTree).
- Variety of Beads (like these or these)
- Variety of Ribbon
- Charms (like the arrows or hearts)
- 14 ga. wire
- Stretch Cord
- Rub-on stickers
- Mini clothespins
- Paper for the background
Once you have gathered what you want to use, the first step is to disassemble the picture frame. Take the paper you are going to use and cut it to fit the frame. If you are using a 11×14 frame, you will cut one piece of 12×12 paper to 11×12 and then another piece 11×3. There will be a slight overlap – but we covered it with the way the ribbon went across the glass. Once you have the paper cut, you will want to take small pieces of tape, and tape it into place in a couple of spots, on the edges of the glass. Now the paper is in place, you will take and cut different ribbons (we used 6 different styles) to the correct length, then taped them on at different angles.
Once you have the ribbon in place you can use the stretch cord, wire, charms and beads to create fun and unique designs on your board. When you are done with that, take and put 3-5 mini clothes pins on each line of ribbon. I found some that were pre-painted, but you can buy the plain mini clothes pins and decorate/paint them as well. You can also apply rub-on stickers (or regular stickers) to the board in a couple of spots to add more design elements. It didn’t take long (less than an hour) from start to finish and I really love how it turned out.
These would also make great teacher gifts for Valentine’s Day. I would love to hear how yours turns out. Please let me know!
