I LOVE Farmhouse style! We have shared so many great Farmhouse projects over the last several months. Today I am excited to share this beautiful Farmhouse Frame Magnetic Chalkboard. It was unfinished wood, with metal. I painted several layers and then sanded it to get the look you see. Check out the step-by-step below.
Farmhouse Frame
Supplies needed:
- Wood Frame with Galvanized Metal
- Chalkboard Sticker
- White Chalk Paint
- Brown Chalk Paint
- Blue/Turquoise Spray Paint
- Electric Sander
- Burlap flowers
- Magnets
- Hot glue gun
I started with this DIY Unfinished Wood Frame with Galvanized Metal from Oriental Trading. I wanted it to be a magnet board as well as a chalkboard. That is why I got the chalkboard sticker to go on it later.
I painted the wood white, and then brown with the chalk paint. Letting it dry between coats. Then I took it outside and spray painted the whole thing the turquoise color.
After it had dried overnight, I took my electric sander and got to work.
As you can see, I took quite a bit of the paint off. It needs to look worn and distressed for that authentic reclaimed, antique look. I did this on all four sides and then got to work on the front.
It actually didn’t take much on the front to get the layers of white and brown paint to show through as pictured below. It looks really great! I am super happy with how it turned out.
I then measured the inside of the frame – and cut a piece of the chalkboard sticker to size. This one was like 8″ x 8″.
Once you have it cut, line it up and then careful apply it, unrolling a bit at a time.
When the board it done, you can make magnets to go on it. I had these burlap flowers on hand and knew they would be perfect for this project. After hot gluing the magnets to the flowers, you will want to let them dry for a couple of minutes, then you will be good to go.
You can use it as a magnet board – and display it with pictures.
Or use a liquid chalk marker and have your kids write notes on it for whoever you are giving it to (even if it’s for yourself ;)).
You can pin the images below to save for later so you can be inspired when you are ready to make it!
I hope you have as much fun as I did making this frame! It is a great gift for Mother’s Day, birthdays, Christmas, etc!
