Anyone who has a cat or has visited the house of someone that owns a cat knows what the “litter box smell” is. I have lived around indoor cats almost all of my life and I still can’t stand the smell of litter boxes. So we make sure to clean ours regularly to try and avoid the smell, but I know it is still there a little. I would burn candles, spray air freshener and many other things to try and mask the odor so that people would not smell it if they came to visit. It was frustrating when I would walk downstairs and smell the litter box. That is when we found Fresh Step® with the power of Febreze™. I no longer have to worry about going into our basement and having the smell of the litter box make me feel like we just drove up to the landfill. I am amazed at how well it (not just masking them) to keep our house smelling fresh and clean and not like the litter box. In fact, Fresh Step® with the power of Febreze™ has a 10-day odor control guarantee. The 10 days is great news for me since we only have one cat and I tend to clean his box once a week – I have noticed how much better our house smells because the really does what it says it does.
So do you want to know how to eliminate the litter box smell in your house? Here are my tips:
- Use a greatlike Fresh Step® with the power of Febreze™
- Clean your cat box regularly adding some fresh litter each time to rejuvenate the odor eliminating “power”
- Get a litter box with a lid and put it in an out-of-the-way place (like ours is in our basement in the laundry room)
- Make sure your cat is only using the litter box (and not having accidents)
- Clean out the litter box and change the litter at least every two months
What do you do to help eliminate the litter box smell in your house?
Since we have had our cat for many years (going on 12 now) I can tell you that keeping your house free of the “pet smell” when you have indoor pets isn’t always easy. A quality litter makes all of the difference in the world. Not only does my cat notice but we do as well. Fresh Step® with the power of Febreze™ has a lower dust formula that leaves us with cleaner surfaces and clearer air, and it actually works to eliminate odors instead of just covering them up temporarily.
Reader Giveaway: 20 lucky winners will each win a February subscription box from CatLadyBox, which will include exclusive cat items for you and your cat as well as a coupon for a free box of Fresh Step® with the power of Febreze™ (approximate retail value of $39.99 each). I’ve used sprays and plug ins to cover the odor and even added baking soda to the litter box.

We’ve tried covering up the smell by trying different brands of cat litter, or sprinkling the box with baking soda. We also discovered that the more natural our cat’s diet is, that is, the further away we get from dry kibble toward eating raw protein, the more the odor just completely disappears!

To cover up my cat’s litter box odors I have sprayed air freshener in the vicinity often and one reason why I want to try Fresh Step® with the power of Febreze is to help the odor at the source.

i dont have cats, but 3 dogs, entering to donate to safe haven cat shelter and clinic. i had a roommate that had a cat ad there was cat litter everywhere, on the kitchen countertops, all over the houses. i hated it. even with my dogs i use febreze. i love it b/c it leaves a fresh smell, in the house. if i had a litter box i would get one of those hidden cat litter boxes or a self cleaning litter box. i also like the ones that are built into a table.

This is the #1 reason my husband dislikes cats. He can not stand the litter box. Maybe this article would change his mind 🙂

I keep the litter boxes in the garage and that helps a lot, if I have guests over I do spray the kitchen and dining room some since they are the rooms closest to the garage.

I have been trying and trying to cover up litter box smells unsuccessfully. I tried changing the litter every day but that really is not cost efficient. I absolutely need this product. I wish I had a basement to use your tip!

We use Fresh Step litter a lot. We haven’t tried the one with Febreeze yet though. We have put incense, plug-in scents, scented candles, but her litter doesn’t smell that much with the litter we use. Plus we stay on top of cleaning it.

We have three cats, and two covered litter boxes. While the covered boxes do help a bit with the odor, our senior Maine Coon is a big boy and isn’t always completely comfortable using the covered boxes. If I could find a litter that really managed the odors, we could get rid of the covers.

We use Fresh Step and it definitely does the trick. Our litter box is in a low-traffic area and the litter really seems to lock in the odors.
