I was able to screen Inside Out 2 in order to write this Inside Out 2 Parents Guide. All opinions are my own.
I am a huge fan of Inside Out. It is a brilliant way to help kids understand emotions and how they affect us. Inside Out 2 picks up pretty close to the end of the first Inside Out movie, as Riley is turning 13 and everything that goes along with growing up and maturing. Several new emotions are introduced in this film, (anxiety, envy, ennui, and embarrassment) expanding her complexity and truly making her relatable to pretty much every teenager. (especially girls). I got emotional because I have four teenagers, three of which are girls, and the story of the movie hit home for me in a lot of ways.
Am I good enough? Nice enough? Strong enough? A good enough friend? Should I change who I am so someone will like me better? Will they still talk to me if I do this?
All of these and more are things that Riley has to go through – of course, her struggles are over the course of a few days – but the way the storyline plays out helps bring a lot of things to light. It opens up doors for conversations and shows that kids are not alone in what they are going through.
One thing I appreciated the most about this movie is that there isn’t even one swear or use of God. That is huge for me and I appreciate it.
It does talk about crushes, and for Riley, it shows males at different times throughout the movie. She admires Val who is on the high school hockey team that she is trying to get on. While it doesn’t push anything toward “feelings” many people believe that could be a precursor to setting her up in a later movie. So while I didn’t feel like there was any kind of LGTBQ push, we will have to wait and see what Disney decides to do going forward.
Another new element that they introduced was a belief system. This is something that I love because it shows your character and defines who you are. It is also good for kids to realize they have one and what it can do and what it means.
I personally liked this one just as much as the first one. I feel like the first one is great for younger kids because of the basic emotions. Inside Out 2 really opens the door and includes a much wider audience now and makes it more real and raw with the new emotions.
With all that being said, this movie is made for any age. It will keep everyone who goes to watch it, entertained and engaged. Different ages will take different messages away. And I love that it can do that. I also hope that it will lead to open conversations with your kids and bring awareness to issues that our kids and even ourselves are dealing with. It also has a lot of humor and so it is a good mix of funny and serious.
