I grew up in a big family where both of my parents were educators – my dad taught high school and my mom taught first grade. This gave me plenty of opportunities to do service in volunteering at the schools and in my community. It taught me valuable lessons that I have been able to teach my children. Everyone’s life circumstances vary so much and we don’t always know what is going on around us close or far so it is important to help as much as possible by donating our time, service and resources to those who are in need.
I am a church group leader for young girls and it is an amazing opportunity to help them learn the importance of service. We often to activities where we make things that they turn around and give to someone in need – like gloves, food and other items. With everything that is going on around us right now, and with the season of the holidays coming, it is more important than ever to step out and help someone. I love the Western Union #ChainOfBetters project because it is encouraging people to do just that. They believe that when money moves, better things happen. This means something like a child going to college to emergency aid arriving in a time of crisis. An economy prospers, an opportunity opens, a community heals. It is a beautiful and moving thing to be a part of.
Something that I have learned over the years, is that when you give your time or resources to others as service, it is always worth it in the end. It is like teaching my 4 year old to share her toys when she doesn’t want to, and then seeing her eyes opened to a whole new way to play with them with her brother. We never know what will come, and by paying it forward at some point it will come back to you. Western Union is kick-starting a chain of good deeds around the world. When money moves – good things happen.
You need to watch this video where three people were each give money to make a difference in the places they live. It is amazing how somethings that I would have never thought of – made a world of difference to so many people.
This is what lies at the heart of the new Chain of Betters project. It’s an idea that empowers people with the opportunity to change the lives of others. As the money moves around the world, creating a chain of good deeds, together we can start to change lives in ways we wouldn’t have imagined was possible. This isn’t just saying money moves for better. This is proving it, together.
What do you do to make the world a better place? It can really be challenging to do big things – but it is all the little things that add up to make a mighty change. Learn more about the Western Union Chain of Betters project here and see how you can help.

How beautiful to see such awe-inspiring deeds done between human beings! How wonderful to tune into the goodness of human spirit instead of all of the ugliness that is going on at the moment…
