We received a copy of Love and Monsters for review. All opinions are my own.
It’s another “End of the World Apocalypse” type movie. Which is fantastic timing since we are in the midst of a worldwide pandemic ourselves and can all somewhat relate. However bad our pandemic is that we’re experiencing, it pales in comparison to what happens in the movie “Love and Monsters” starring Dylan O’Brien (Joel Dawson.)
Joel has been hiding out in a bunker for the last 7 years with a small colony of survivors. 95% of the world is dead and monster mutated insects, animals, and fish rule the earth. Joel has lost everyone he knows, except for his girlfriend Aimee (Jessica Henwick) from Highschool who he was separated from when the apocalypse started.
The movie portrays Joel as a timid, full of fear, skill-less young adult who the colony loves, but doesn’t trust to leave the bunker to scavenge for food and supplies. Joel spends most of his spare time using the radio to contact Aimee who is living in another colony of survivors roughly 80 miles away near the ocean.
Love does strange things to people. It sometimes gives them the courage to do crazy things like leave a safe and protected bunker to venture across 80 miles of dangerous monster infested terrain.
The special effects seem flawless, the movie initially takes on somewhat of a quirky tone with many of the characters making fun of Joel and his flaws with mild humored jokes. During Joel’s “quest” he meets multiple other fun and exciting characters that change his and his colonies’ perception of who he is and what he is capable of.
This film was extremely well made with a good plot and storyline. Great special effects. And above all, fun and entertaining to watch. Pre-order your copy of Love and Monsters now! It comes out on DVD, Blu-ray, 4K on January 5, 2021. Or you can buy or rent it on digital now!
