ABCmouse.com is an online educational program. My kids have been using it for a few months now and I can tell that they are benefitting from having a supplement to their learning. It makes things fun for them, combines learning with games, stories and other fun activities.
The kids get to create ‘characters’. These are a girl or boy, and they can completely customize it, down to the eye color. My girls spent a good amount of time doing this, and enjoyed every minute of it. When you first add a new child, they will get the opportunity to customize their character. After they have done this and the profile is completed, you can start the learning part. If they feel the need to change something (like hair color, clothes, shoes, etc) they can use points they have earned from doing their lessons to buy new outfits, etc and change the look of their character.
Another thing they really liked about ABCmouse.com were how many sections there were with different activities in each one. They were never board because they were able to choose an activity, and then move onto a different section if they wanted a change.
My daughter that is four started in the online preschool section, and my other daughter who is 7 started in the online kindergarten section. (She knew most of the lessons, but she still had fun and it helped reinforce what she has learned).
Each section has levels in it. As they learn more and pass off an area, they advance to a more challenging set of lessons. This keeps them learning new content and interested in playing it more.
I really like that it is online, so that when we are out-of-town, I can just bring it up on my laptop and the can still do their work. It is not computer specific since it is all done online.
I found the layout a little confusing, but it didn’t take long to figure it out. The kids got the hang of it quickly and were able to navigate the whole thing without a problem.
Overall, it is a great program that I would recommend to anyone with kids ages 2-6. Wither they are home schooled, in public school, or not in school yet, there is something to learn on ABCmouse.com.
ABCmouse.com is designed much like a classroom for kids between the ages of two and six. It has over 2,000 learning activities – from games and puzzles to books, songs, art lessons – in the subject areas of reading, mathematics, social studies, beginning science, art and music. The content is interactive, complete with animation and audio – meticulously monitored under the advisement of top early education experts, including Dr. Rebecca Palacios (co-founder of National Board of Professional Teaching Standards, with a PhD in curriculum development) and Kimberly Oliver Burnim (National Teacher of the Year for 2006). There are more than 350 custom lesson plans spanning six academic levels—all tailored to supplement and support preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten programs.
***All users are able to add up to 3 children to each family account. Each child will have his/ her own user account complete with full access to all site content and features independently of one another, including custom avatars, tickets earned to “buy” virtual items, etc. Further, parents can track each child’s individual progress separately.
(I received free access to ABCmouse.com, however all opinions are 100% my own)
