We received tickets so we could visit the Aquarium. All opinions are our own.
Monday I took my family to the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium in Draper, Utah. It was so much fun! We have been before, but my two youngest didn’t remember visiting, so they were bouncing off their seats with excitement. Hunter (my 7 year old son) LOVES turtles. He was amazed and enchanted with all of the turtles there, but his favorite were the two sea turtles in the Shark Tank. We even got to learn more about them and see some fossils before we went into the exhibit. The Living Planet Aquarium is huge, so plan on spending several hours there exploring and seeing everything. There are also some perks included with your ticket, like the 4-D movies. We watched all three of the ones playing when we were there and my kids loved them all. Not only do they have amazing 3-D, but the seats rumble and air (and sometimes water) spray on you to give you the full effect of the movie. It was a lot of fun. These play several times a day throughout the day and last anywhere from about 12 mins to 25 mins depending on the film.
We really enjoyed their special display “Expedition: Asia”. There were so many interesting kinds of fish, animals, and other creatures. The clouded leopards are beautiful. We didn’t get to see very much of them, but really enjoyed what we saw. This whole display is great and well worth spending some time in.
I took so many pictures while we were there, so it was hard to choose which ones to share, but I picked out most of my favorites which you can see below and get a mini tour, and we also made a fun short video about our experience so be sure to check that out. Feel free to browse these pictures and we will catch back up with you at the bottom with tips for visiting, and more information about the Haunted Aquarium going on right now!
There are so many creatures and animals at the aquarium that I couldn’t even begin to tell you about them all, but I can tell you that we thoroughly enjoyed seeing and learning about all of them. There is a lot of hands on activities for kids and there is always something interesting to see. Things your kids will love (aside from the obvious) are the rope bridge, testing the eel current, touching pond for the star fish and sting rays, the statues, the tunnels and clear windows in some of the displays, and the submarine. These are just a few of the fun things we found. There really is so much to do there. The penguin display was my favorite. I love watching them swim and play around. The shark tank was very cool too. You can walk under it and then go into a different room and see if from the side. I really loved everything about it and exploring it all with my kids was the best part!
Here are some tips for visiting the aquarium so you are prepared for your visit:
- Leave your jackets/coats in the car if you can since it is warm inside and hot in some places
- Bring a portable charger for your phone because you will wear the battery down taking pictures and video
- Bring your “nice” camera if you have one (don’t forget batteries)
- There is no food or drink allowed inside but you can buy food/drinks at the food court and there are several drinking fountains throughout the aquarium
- Take it slow and enjoy your time there. I loved just sitting and watching the penguins. My kids loved the shark tank. The otters were also fun to watch. All of the displays were stare worthy!
- Take in at least one of the 4-D movies and watch them all if you have time
- Take time to teach your kids about what they are seeing (use the informational boards by the displays) so they can remember more about the trip
Overall we really loved our visit to the aquarium and the kids can’t wait to go back again. Plan a trip to the Living Planet Aquarium during the Haunted Aquarium between now and the 31 and take in all of the fun and spooky additions. My kids had so much fun finding them all. I admit that I was a little freaked out by the giant spiders lol, but they did look cool. The Living Planet Aquarium is a must visit while you are in the Salt Lake area. If you live close, they have annual passes you can get for your family and enjoy the aquarium any time!
