This is a fun series about “What I learned today”. It could have to do with coupons, kitchen tips, household stuff, kids, shopping, driving, whatever I feel like an funny or important thing I learned today. It’s a fun way for you to get to know me better and you are always welcome to share yours as well!
Today I learned that no matter how many times I go shopping at Wal-Mart with coupons, it never ceases to amaze me how many of the cashiers STILL don’t know the coupon policy! For example:
I went to get my FREE El Monteray Burritos with the free coupons that came out a few weeks ago, and the cashier told me she didn’t think they could accept it. (hmmmm). I told her they were from the paper, not printed and they are supposed to take them.
“well….I just don’t think we can accept coupons for free items. I don’t think it will work” she told me.
So I said “You can try scanning it to see if it will work. I know that you won’t have any problems.”
Of course a manager was called over, a big deal was made and in the end the manager simply asked “well does it scan?”
The cashier stumbled over her words a little and said ‘well I don’t know’….. (“GRRRRRRR” is what was thinking on the inside, trying appear calm and patient on the outside. . . .
So of course she scanned it and it worked. Then she is like well now I have to take all the burritos off and do them one by one????? WHAT?!?!?!?
The manager simply showed her how to do all the coupons quickly, without having to do any further alterations to my trip and magically we were done within a couple minutes!
This is just one of my many many experiences there like this. I very rarley have these kinds of issues at other stores and I just don’t understand what the problem is. I know there is coupon fraud and all of that, but I feel almost like they are so bent on tormenting couponers! Of course its not true, and it may just be the stores in my area…I don’t know.
What is coupon shopping like at your Wal-Mart?

Have any of you used coupons at Dollar Tree? The store, by me at least, takes forever! They take a microscope to each and every coupon. it takes forever! I give them the coupons first now, so they can look at the product & coupon to make sure they match. But, last time it took me about 1/2 to check out. huge line behind me, kids were embarrassed! lol
I am cheap. If I figure out the price on my calculator; and the price isn’t right, I take forever to check out! I may be a pain in the butt, but I just want to make sure all coupons were used and products ring up correctly. I spend too much time on coupons tonot get credit for them at the register!

I’m from Wisconsin and after having extremely bad experiences with coupons there several times, I refuse to go to Wal-Mart anymore. It’s usually cheaper to go other places anyways.

Wal-Mart will price match, but my Kroger doubles $1 coupons. So, it’s cheaper for me to go to Kroger. Plus I hate all the crowds at Wal-Mart!
Pam says
From what I understand, the manufacturer reimburses the store for the coupon; and if the store allows double coupons, the store pays for the double. Maybe i am wrong. i just wonder why some coupons say do not double? Some of the items are new. Why would you care if someone uses a coupon and doubles it to try your product? If you like it enough, you will buy it again!

I had this EXACT same experience at Wal-mart yesterday. Not only did they question the free coupon I had but also the internet coupons I had (not for free items) would not scan, they never scan for some reason so of course a manager is called and tells cashier to key them in. I don’t get it. I thnk Karen may be right and it’s to discourage coupon use. Which is why I normally shop for groceries elsewhere.

I believe it is ALL Wal-marts in ALL the world!!! I can’t decide if the store just does not take the time to properly train cashiers, or if they just try to discourage coupon use. Either way, it is very frustrating!!
